We are looking for talented design leaders interested in driving the creation of sustainable store design concepts from ideation to execution globally. We are seeking a candidate that has a strong understanding and interest in issues related to global trend and environmental sustainability within retail and/or hospitality design. A global, diverse and holistic design perspective is necessary. Finally, the candidate must be self managed, a strong team leader, motivated, proactive, and passionate.

This job contributes to Starbucks success by leading a team in creating new store concepts and enhancements to the existing store portfolio that supports varied customer need states and points of distribution. Manages concept design team to produce design concepts and programs in support of the objectives of the Starbucks Global Concept Design. Collaborates with Store Concept partners, business managers and other stakeholders to develop multiple design concepts and coordinates deliver of design solutions that meet the business needs of the company. Provides a leadership role in the development and implementation of the vision for Starbucks brand, creative objectives and design process. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

Leadership – Setting goals for the work group, developing organizational capability, and modeling how we work together:

  • Communicates architectural design strategy and direction. Ensures clear understanding of strategy, priorities and business impact to the team. Provides clear, effective and timely communication of architectural design direction and changes. Effectively addresses exceptions and troubleshoots where needed.
  • Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the immediate team of direct reports promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results.
  • Supports the implementation of company programs to ensure the success of the Company

Planning and Execution – Developing strategic and operational plans for the work group, managing execution, and measuring results:

  • Establish architectural design direction. Communicate Global Concept Design business goals as well as Starbucks goals and ensure successful execution. Provide clear direction on target deliverables and communicate changes in priorities. Lead communication on best practices across business units.
  • Responsible for completion of development drawings and design solutions by design team on a project basis
  • Communicate store/project budget goals, coach teams on expectations, provide target schedule, and monitor progress.
  • Communicate company policies and practices. Cascade company goals and targets to team and provide guidance to ensure solutions are linked to company as well as Global Concept Design goals.
  • Prepares, communicates and educates client groups and team on changes in policies and practices within the organization.
  • Sets and maintains the professional standards required to meet business unit/department and company objectives

Business Requirements – Providing functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance of architectural standards. Review and approve all design work and effectively provide feedback.
  • Provide direction and resolve conflicts in partnership with Directors of design and other cross functional business units as needed.
  • Manages relationships with consultants to ensure compliance of service standards.
  • Stays abreast on trends in the field and developing designs in markets
  • Provides resources needed for Concept Design teams to meet schedules. Review schedule and work flow to anticipate needs. Prioritize work effectively and gain alignment with other business units to support Concept Design team. Communicate resource short falls to Director Concept Design in a timely manner. Provide time to team members to review and approve work in a timely manner.
  • Identify necessary tools and training for teams

Partner Development & Team Building – Providing partners with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and building effective teams:

  • Coaches team in process and project requirements. Ensures execution of scope deliverables identified in approved business case.
  • Challenges and inspires partners to achieve business results.
  • Conducts and ensures the completion of performance reviews
  • Ensures continued partner development and development of direct reports. Coaches partners in effectively creating development plans. Ensures execution of development plan. Identify necessary tools and training for teams.
  • Ensures partners adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements.
  • Oversees training and development of partners directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions. Builds bench strength
  • Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partner, business and customer results. Provides coaching and conflict resolution.

Summary of Experience

  • Retail, Hospitality and/or Restaurant Design Experience (similar scale to Starbucks Stores): 8-10 years
  • Managing a design group in a design environment: 5 years
  • Collaboration with industrial, graphic design and environmental disciplines: 8 years
  • Management responsibility in a national and/or international company: 5 years
  • AutoCAD, Revit, Microstation and 3D rendering programs: 5 years
  • Project management experience leading large-scale design projects in a multi-unit environment: 3 years
  • LEED certified and experience with sustainable building (preferred)

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • BS architecture, interior design, or environmental design or equivalent experience
  • Current knowledge of industry trends in retail store and restaurant design
  • Current working knowledge of building and health codes and compliance issues
  • Demonstrated 3D visualization ability and working knowledge of color and design principles
  • Ability to execute multiple designs under tight deadlines
  • Skilled in the visual, written and verbal communication of design issues
  • Ability to translate stated design principles / objectives into unique and varied store locations
